As their name implies, brushless DC motors do not feature brushes like their brushed motor alternatives. Instead, they are powered by a direct current voltage supply and commutated electronically. While both brushed and brushless motors have their preferred applications, and you should speak to our sales engineers to discover which is best for your own application, it’s often considered that the brushless motor design is better suited to applications that will make use of its longer lifespan and greater energy efficiency.
EMS supplies UK and Irish manufacturers with a range of small DC motor options, including brushless motors options from several leading brands. These include:
As the exclusive UK and Ireland supplier of FAULHABER drives and precision micro systems, EMS offers a range of brushless DC motors to markets including medical technology, laboratory equipment, the aviation and automotive industries and robotics and industrial applications.
FAULHABER Brushless DC Servomotors are built for extreme operating conditions. They are precise, have extremely long lifetimes and are highly reliable. The motors boast exceptional qualities such as silent running and especially low noise levels, making them ideal for applications such as in medical equipment for a more comfortable wear by their user.
The rare-earth magnet functioning as the rotor, and System FAULHABER winding technology, ensures that these motors deliver peak performance dynamics within the most compact dimensions. Some series are also available in an autoclavable version and are ideally suited for applications in laboratory and medical equipment. Starting from just a six-millimetre (mm) diameter and reaching 44-mm diameter, this range of brushless motors offers a significant power to weight ratio with maximum power reaching up to 212W.

Brushless motors available from KAG include the ECM series, which is available in frame sizes of 42, 48, 63 and 75 mm. This comprehensive range provides power output (at Nom. 3000rpm) from 8W to 154W and developments in its design ensure high performance with a maximum speed of 8,000 rpm (ECM 63 and ECM 75) and 10,000 rpm (ECM 42 and ECM 48).
In addition, the rotors of the ECM have a quadripolar design with resin bonded NeFeB (neodymium iron boron) magnets. This results in a smoother running to guarantee a high power to weight ratio. Life expectancy of the ECM brushless motors series is in excess of 20,000 hours of continuous operation. Care has also been taken in the construction of the motors to reduce weight to a minimum, achieved by using aluminium end shields and housings.
