Brushless DC Motors

Brushless DC motors from EMS

What is a brushless DC motor?

A brushless DC (BLDC) motor is a permanent magnet motor that uses electronic commutation instead of mechanical brushes to generate motion. Compared with brushed DC motors, BLDC motors typically offer higher efficiency, lower maintenance requirements, quieter operation and a longer service life.

This makes brushless DC motors suitable for the following applications:

  • Surgical and diagnostic medical equipment
  • Laboratory automation
  • Robotic grippers
  • AGVs and AMRs
  • Optical measurement systems
  • Aerospace instrumentation
  • Factory automation
  • Valve actuation
  • Agricultural automation

EMS supplies UK and Irish manufacturers with a range of small, high-performance brushless DC motor options. These include motor types from several leading brands, such as FAULHABER, Bühler Motor and KAG.

FAULHABER brushless high torque DC motors

As the exclusive UK and Ireland supplier of FAULHABER drives and precision micro systems, EMS offers a wide range of brushless DC motors.

Key markets include medical technology, laboratory equipment, the aviation and automotive industries, robotics and industrial applications.

For example, the silent running and especially low noise levels of the brushless DC motors makes them ideal for use in medical equipment. These features allow for a more comfortable wear for the user.

FAULHABER Brushless DC Servomotors are built for extreme operating conditions. They are reliable and precise, with long lifespans.

The rare-earth permanent magnet functioning as the rotor, and System FAULHABER winding technology, ensures these motors deliver peak performance dynamics within the most compact dimensions.

Some series are also available in an autoclavable version, which are particularly suited to applications in laboratory and medical equipment.

Starting from just a three-millimetre (mm) diameter and reaching 44-mm diameter, this range offers a significant power to weight ratio with maximum power reaching up to 282W.

Bühler Motor industrial brushless motors

Bühler’s brushless DC motors are available in a range of power requirements, covering a performance range of up to 200 W. Bühler describes its BLDC motors as being "characterised by quiet running and excellent durability", making them suitable for applications where reliability and low noise are important.

Among the most innovative areas of Bühler’s offer is the bMotion modular drive platform of DC motors, gear boxes, brakes and encoders.

Offering an easily combinable system, complete drive solutions can be mixed and matched to create pre-validated, market-specific combinations for easy purchasing and installation of Bühler products.

The electronically commutated motors, capable of delivering up to 610 watts of power, can be easily integrated into various projects and a wide range of competitive solutions.

Bühler’s brushless motors are recognised for their quiet operation and outstanding durability. The highly efficient permanent magnets ensure excellent acceleration. They are also suitable for precise positioning control with the addition of an encoder.

As the UK’s exclusive supplier of Bühler motors, EMS has immediate availability. Customers can access standardised, tried-and-tested Bühler motors quickly and efficiently.

For customers that require a bespoke option, there is the possibility to order variants of standard brushless DC motors.

KAG brushless DC motors

Among the brushless DC motors available from Kaehlig Antriebstechnik GmbH (KAG) are those from the ECM range. The available series are 35, 42, 48, 63 and 75.

KAG’s comprehensive range provides power output (at Nom. 3000rpm) from 8W to 220W. Also, developments in its design ensure high performance with a maximum speed of 8,000 rpm (ECM63 and ECM75) and 10,000 rpm (ECM42 and ECM48).

In addition, the rotors of the ECM have a quadripolar design with resin bonded NeFeB (neodymium iron boron) magnets. This results in a smoother running to guarantee a high power to weight ratio.

Life expectancy of the ECM series is in excess of 20,000 hours of continuous operation.

Care has also been taken in the construction of the motors to reduce weight to a minimum, achieved by using aluminium end shields and housings.
